What is HBV Cure?

In a consensus workshop by the American Association for Study of Liver, it was agreed that “functional” cure of Chronic Hepatitis B was the loss of HBsAg in the blood. HBsAg is a test that if positive, identifies the person as having hepatitis B

Studies have shown that loss of HBsAg leads to improved survival, reduced risk of liver cancer, liver cirrhosis and liver failure.

In certain situations it is possible that persons who lose HBsAg can become positive again usually due to impairment of their immune system by chemotherapy or drugs that act against the immune system.
